One of approximately 15,000 riot and training shotguns manufactured by Savage for the U.S. military during World War II. This example, with 20" barrel as would be standard issue to the U.S. Military for close quarters combat.
Description:
Standard configuration Savage Arms Model 720 shotgun with plain 20" barrel chambered in 12 gauge 2 3/4" chamber. The left side of the barrel is marked “SAVAGE”, “SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION / UTICA, NEW YORK, U.S.A”, “MODEL 720”, with a U.S. flaming bomb, “P”, “SP” in oval and “****” reflecting improved cylinder choke. The right side of the barrel is marked “PROOF TESTED-12 GAUGE / – 2 3/4 INCH CHAMBER”. The left side of the receiver is marked with a “P” and a flaming bomb followed by “U.S”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number “72841”. Checkered forend and plain buttstock with pistol grip. Unmarked serrated hard rubber buttcap.
Condition:
VG+ original rust blue finish on barrel and receiver with sharp edge wear and thinning in usual areas of carry/handling, especially bottom of trigger guard and front strap. Comparable condition furniture with buttstock slightly bowed on right side where contacting receiver, a noticeable gouge further back as carefully imaged. Buttplate with expected wear. Very nice and correct Savage 720 shotgun as issued to the U.S. military for riot/training purpose during WWII.
