Offering simplistic reliability and capable performance at an extremely accessible price point, the Maverick Model 88 is a pump-action shotgun manufactured in the USA by Mossberg and is a near-copy of Mossberg's own Model 500. In fact, many parts are interchangeable between the two, including furniture and accessories! The Maverick 88 is chambered in 12 gauge and can accept up 3" shells with a maximum capacity of 5 rounds with standard 2 ¾" shells. The gun has a crossbolt safety for easy ambidextrous access. The Maverick 88 Security is a security/defensive-oriented trim with a shortened 18 ½" barrel and a fixed cylinder choke for shooting any variety of shot or rifled slugs. The barrel has a simple single brass front bead for aiming and the receiver is grooved to reduce glare. It is not, however, drilled and tapped to accept optics. The smaller form factor makes the shotgun lighter and faster to handle and can be manipulated in smaller spaces much easier than a full-length shotgun, making it ideal for a home defense weapon, truck gun, or even a youth shotgun. This Maverick 88 Security is in good shape, with great fitment and smooth, quick action. The lacquered finish on the receiver is good, but the barrel's blued finish does have some light speckled surface rust. It does not appear to be deeper than the finish, though, and the internal surfaces are rust-free. This shotgun does not include a box or case. 12 Gauge
