Thompson Center Hawken with Sharon Rifle Barrel Co., .45 Caliber, Octagon Barrel
Description:
This Thompson Center Hawken, .45 caliber, percussion muzzleloading rifle has a blued 33-inch octagon Sharon Rifle Barrel Company barrel (including the breech block) with eight rifling grooves and a twist ratio of 1:48. The rifle is equipped with a set trigger, tang peep site, and a hooded post front site (dovetailed in). I am not sure if the tang sight and front post site are original to the gun. The stock is made of walnut and is accented with various brass parts – butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod pipes (thimbles), wedge, wedge escutcheons, and patch-box plate. The lock plate and hammer have ornate floral engravings and are case hardened giving them very attractive case colors. The trigger guard also shows case colors matching that of the lock plate and hammer. The case colors are not at all worn. The ramrod has a brass end cap and a threaded ramrod tip with no screw tip. However, based on its material and color, I do not believe the ramrod is original to this gun. The only markings on this rifle are on the belly of the barrel – “SHARON RIFLE BARREL CO. .45 CAL”. The total weight of the rifle is 9 pounds, 12.1 ounces. The barrel itself weighs 6 pounds, .02 ounces. Its overall length is 50 inches. The length of pull is about 14 ½. There are no box, papers, or accessories with this rifle. This gun was manufactured in the early 1970s.
Notwithstanding the scratches on the stock and the non-original ramrod, I believe the overall condition of this gun is 98 percent. The walnut stock is not damaged beyond the scratches and would be easily refinished. The barrel is in very excellent condition, except for a few shiny scratches, thus the 98 percent assessment.
