Super cool High Grade Whitney Firearms Mfg. Co 20ga "Whitney Safety" Gun - only one I've ever seen in 20ga - with great dimensions, too!
Description:
Absolutely fantastic and rare little 20ga gun made by Whitney Firearms Mfg. Co. of Florence, MA. This gun, an extreme rarity in 20ga - one of about 1100 guns made in total by the company but the only one I have ever seen or heard of in 20ga. This gun made with 28" damascus barrels. Made with splinter forend which is finely checkered in scallop and point pattern. The boxlock action is beatufilly engraved in about "C" Grade Parker quality and the engraving looks just like what the guys in Meriden were doing - most likely the same hands engraved these rare guns! The gun is cocked with a large cocking safety which depresses at the grip area to cock it, then uncocks when released. The top tang does not have a safety because the gun is not cocked until the grip cocker is depressed - a unique idea in the days of the early internal hammer guns and their development! The buttstock is nicely figured and beautifully checkered in fleur-de-lis and scalloped border pattern and the butt terminates with a modern Silver's Type pad.
Overall, the gun remains in excellent condition with more than 95% bold damascus pattern. The action retains some original color with crisp engraving and the balance toning. Stocks are sound and original and retain most of their original finish with finish added for preservation. Bores are mostly bright and shiny with a touch of orange peel and mechanics are crisp. The gun is tight overall.
This is an extremely rare gun and would make a great addition to any collection of American doubles that documents the development of internal hammers in this country. The gun is priced at $4195 plus shipping and can be sent directly to your home as an antique. Please dont hesitate to contact me at (704) 280-2382 or via PM on this site with any questions or reasonable offers.
