Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Parker Brothers Grade 1 Double Barrel Hammerless 12 Gauge Shotgun, made in 1904 in Meriden, Connecticut, with only 15,588 Grade 1 Hammerless gun produced. Charles Parker was an entrepreneur who began working in U.S. manufacturing in the 1830s. Interestingly, one of his first products was a coffee mill. He also collaborated on several government contracts to make arms during the American Civil War, including one for the Model 1861 and then a truly interesting, rare breech-loading design for the state of Kentucky, called the Triplett & Scott Carbine. Finally, in 1866, after his experience in arms manufacture for the war effort, he and his sons, Wilbur and Dexter, began the company Parker Brothers, making sporting shotguns. This company is considered by many to have been the best manufacturer of fine American shotguns, ever. The company was in business until 1942.

The Grade 1 gun designation started in 1882. As Parker introduced the named grades they named Grade 1 guns I, K, L, M, N, O. P, Q, NH and PH. The PH and NH describes Grade 1 hammerless Parkers. The other names describe Grade 1 hammer guns. These names were based on various gauge and stock configurations. The early grade 1 guns had English Twist barrels and in later years Twist Steel and Laminated Steel barrels were used. About 1917, Parker started using fluid steel barrels and marked the barrel ribs with Parker Steel. Total production numbers included 586 Lifter Hammer guns, 3,804 Top Lever Hammer guns, and 15,588 Hammerless guns. As can be seen by the production numbers, the Grade 1 guns did not sell as well as the higher priced Grade 2 or the lower priced Grade 0.

The characteristics between the Grade 0 and the Grade 1 were minimal. They had slightly better quality wood and a little additional engraving around the screw heads on the frame. Ejectors were an option on PH grade. The guns with ejectors (PHE) are desirable to collectors and can add as much as 50% to their collector value.

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. Strong action. Both bores are bright and smooth. The right bore/barrel has two dents. One is about 9 inches in from the muzzle, the other is about 8 inches in from the breech. Markings are legible. Numbers match. The stock and forend are solid with average wear. Damascus pattered barrel.
