Rare Parker Brothers Quality-L Top-Action 16-Gauge on No. 0 Frame, 28-Inch Laminated-Steel Barrels
Description: This Parker Brothers Quality-L, Top-Action 16-gauge hammer shotgun, s/n 50802, was manufactured in 1887. The records maintained by the Parker Gun Collectors Association establish that it was ordered by Huntington Hopkins & Co of Sacramento, CA on May 23, 1887. The original price was $65. As documented in The Parker Story (p. 268), only 24 were manufactured. The gun has a No. 0 frame. The 28-inch laminated-steel barrels are both choked improved modified (.020) and have 2-1/2-inch chambers. The bore diameter of the right barrel measured at 9 inches from the breech is .668 and of the left barrel is .662. The outside diameter of the right barrel measured at the muzzle is .754 and of the left barrel is .752. The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9 inches from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .035/.033/.037 and at the middle of the barrel are .043/.043/.042. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .037/.036/.031 and .044/.044/.043, respectively. Bores are bright. The exterior of the barrels has 100% coverage of well-defined laminated-steel pattern and no dents or pits. The lettering on the top rib is deep and crisp. The barrels show no signs of having been sanded and refinished. However, the weep hole in the bottom rib could indicate that the finish was refreshed at some point in the gun’s history; if so in this case, it was professionally done a long time ago The nicely figured American-walnut stock appears to have the original finish and checkering, both of which are in excellent condition. The wood behind the locks and the buttplate is pristine. The LOP is 14-1/4 inches to the end of the original horn buttplate. The DAC is 1-5/8 inches and the DAH 2-5/8 inches. The cast is neutral. No case-color remains on the outside of the locks and receiver, but is present on the backs of sideplates and trigger plate. The patina on the receiver and bottom metal is what one would expect of a gun of this age. The receiver has no dent, scratches, or pits. Its engraving is sharp. The gun weighs 6 pounds 14 ounces. It locks up tightly. All serial numbers match. The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on the range using shells manufactured by RST Corporation designed for use in Damascus-barreled shotguns. However, as for any antique shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing, and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.
