1860s C. Maybury 10-gauge Pinfire SxS Lockfast w/Damascus Barrels
Description: Circa 1860s 10-bore pinfire exposed hammer shotgun by Charles Maybury of Birmingham, England. This understated specimen, with its attractively figured stock and damascus barrels featuring cylinder chokes, evokes the character of a rabbit hunting shotgun belonging to a middle-class English gentleman or prosperous farmer, rather than the heavily engraved pieces favored by the aristocracy. This shotgun holds particular interest because the action bears the name "J Wilkes." John Wilkes was from a Birmingham gunmaking family who later established connections with J.D. Dougall, the inventor of the Lockfast system patented in 1860. The Lockfast system uses two circular bosses on the breech face to seal the breech of the barrels, which are moved down and forward by a lever to open the action. Most Lockfast guns feature a lever on the right side of the action, whereas this example employs a bottom-mounted lever, reminiscent of Lefaucheux-style mechanisms. This combination of design elements, along with the possibility that this gun may be a converted percussion piece, gives this firearm a distinctive character despite its relative plainness. The figure in the unrestored stock is richly attractive without being excessive. Condition: The wood finish retains much of its original luster and the checkering remains in very good condition. The bore and exterior barrels show some pitting, though not severe enough to affect functionality.
