The F.lli Piotti Best Quality Sidelock represents the extraordinary craftsmanship that established Piotti as one of Italy's premier makers of bespoke sporting arms. Built during the company's formative years, this 1964 example showcases the meticulous hand-fitting, elegant styling, and refined mechanics that would later make Piotti one of the world's most respected manufacturers of Best-quality shotguns.
Chambered in 12 gauge with 2.75-inch chambers, the shotgun is fitted with 28-inch barrels choked Improved Cylinder (.014") and Modified (.022"), an ideal configuration for upland birds and general game shooting. Weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces, it offers excellent balance and lively handling. The hand-matted concave rib is fitted with a traditional gold front bead.
The gun is built on a beautifully rounded Holland & Holland-style sidelock action featuring double triggers with an articulated front trigger, cocking indicators, non-automatic safety, and ejectors. Mechanically, it remains in excellent overall condition. The bores are clear, the triggers are crisp, the ejectors are strong and in time, and the action is smooth and locks up tight.
The case color hardened sidelock action is adorned with elegant floral and ribbon scroll engraving covering nearly the entire receiver, while the pierced top lever adds another hallmark of Best-quality craftsmanship. The blued steel barrels provide a striking contrast to the vivid case colors.
The shotgun is stocked with beautifully figured deluxe walnut in the classic English straight-grip configuration with a matching splinter forend. Fine diamond-point checkering remains sharp throughout. The gun retains its traditional checkered butt, with only a small repair at the heel, and features a blank gold initial oval on the belly of the stock.
