The Piotti Setter is one of the most historically significant shotguns ever produced by the famed Italian maker Armi Piotti. Manufactured in 1961, this example comes from Piotti's very first year of production and bears the exceptionally low serial number 212, making it an outstanding collector's piece. Even more desirable, it is built in the scarce 24 gauge, the smallest gauge offered in the Setter model.
Built on a robust sidelock hammer action, the Setter features a top lever, double triggers, extractor, Greener cross-bolt, and Piotti's distinctive four-point locking system consisting of double underlugs, a Greener cross-bolt, and an additional locking fastener behind the cross-bolt. Chambered for 24 gauge with 2.5-inch chambers, it is fitted with 27.875-inch barrels choked Improved Modified (.026") in both barrels. Weighing 6 pounds 6.2 ounces, the gun is lively in the hands while maintaining the strength expected of a classic game gun.
Mechanically, the shotgun is in excellent overall condition. The bores are clear, the triggers are crisp, the rebounding hammers are strong, and the action locks up tightly with all four locking points functioning as intended.
The case color hardened sidelock action is tastefully embellished with border and scroll engraving, highlighted by game bird scenes engraved ahead of each hammer. The blued steel barrels complement the traditional appearance and retain their excellent finish.
The walnut stock is fitted with a classic Woodward-style pistol grip and matching forend, both featuring sharp diamond-point checkering that reflects the quality of Piotti's early craftsmanship.
Marco Nobili, in his authoritative book on Piotti, describes the Setter as: "Hammer side-by-side shotgun with top fourth grip. Built in 12, 16, 20 and 24 with normal ejectors, it had slightly engraved action with internally chrome-plated barrels. It remained in the catalogue until 1972."
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
Opportunities to acquire a first-year Piotti are exceptionally rare. With its 1961 production date, low serial number, scarce 24 gauge chambering, and status as one of the earliest Piotti shotguns ever built, this Setter represents an important piece of Italian gunmaking history. For the serious Piotti collector, it is a cornerstone firearm and one that would be exceedingly difficult to replace.
