James Purdey Island Lock 12 Bore Hammergun with Damascus Barrels - No. 2 of a Pair
Description: Handsome Purdey island lock back action hammergun with original Damascus barrels and thumbhole opening. Purdey no. 7533 was made 1867 - 1868. Sharp engraving, some residual case coloring, nicely figured English walnut stock and forearm, extractors, and rebounding hammers. Weighs 6lb 5oz making it a brilliant upland gun. *** The original 27” Damascus barrels ring like a bell and are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “J. Purdey 314 ½ Oxford Street London”. Recently rebrowned. Bores are shiny and bright and the browning shows no appreciable wear. It has extractors, 2-1/2” chambers and black powder proofs. Safe with sensible low pressure loads like those manufactured by RST. There is a round dent in the top of the rib(pictured below) but there is no damage to the barrel. The right barrel is bored 0.739 with a constriction of 0.00 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The left barrel is also bored 0.739 and has a constriction of 0.00 for Cylinder choking. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. Cylinder choking was typical of guns in this era before choke boring was introduced. *** The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut and with a little touch-up would restore their former glory of their finish. There are some handling marks on the stock but they can be easily repaired. There is a 1-3/8” stock extension with a checkered butt. Stock dimensions are 14-9/16” by 1-9/16” by 2-3/8”. Cast off for the righthand shot. A very nice example of an early Purdey hammergun that is in good mechanical condition and tight on face. Has recently rebrowned Damascus barrels and nicely figured stock. Perfect gun with its open chokes and light weight for grouse, woodcock and quail. There is nothing like shooting with an historic double with its great handling and classic beauty. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
