Extremely Rare – original condition, 12 bore, 2-3/4” case, completed in 1878, top-lever bar-in-iron hammer pigeon gun, smooth case-hardened percussion fences, beautifully engraved side plates signed 'J. PURDEY & SONS', engraved trigger guard, retaining approx. 50% of color-hardening and finish. Trigger guard is also beautifully engraved, shows serial no. 10,358. All screws in good condition. Considering its age – its really nice.
Damascus barrels with one small dent on each barrel (see pics), the rib is engraved “PURDEY & SONS 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON”, barrels retain about 60-70 of original finish.
Well-figured straight-grip stock with period-correct (Possibly the original) leather butt pad and what appears to be a gold inlaid disc or “medallion”. The fore-end wood and engraved metal are also in good condition with one very small chip in wood along edge. Fore-end has cross-pin / wedge release. Gun weight is reported (source Purdey) to be 7lb. 4oz.
The case appears to be the gun’s original leather-covered wood case. It comes with original key, a turn screw, a firing pin wrench, two-barrel corks, misc. parts, and Directions booklet. The original James Purdey & Sons label is on the inside of case lid along with Charges label. Gun and gun case appear 100% original with no signs of structural damage.
I have not test-fired but appears to function properly. I have attempted to provide sufficient photos to evaluate the condition but provide more upon request. Letter and Gun information is provided by Purdey of London.
