Completed circa 1966, as confirmed on page 195 of Donald Dallas’ Purdey Gun and Rifle Makers: The Definitive History, this exceptional sidelock ejector represents the timeless craftsmanship and mechanical excellence that have made James Purdey & Sons one of the most respected names in fine sporting arms. Built with blued steel chopperlump barrels, the gun features a raised matted tapered solid rib with single bead sight, classic Purdey barrel inscriptions, London nitro proofs, 2 3/4 inch chambers, and Purdey’s renowned Wem ejectors. The primary barrel set is choked modified/full, while the included matching numbered 26 1/2 inch barrel set offers a more open improved cylinder/modified style configuration for added versatility in the field.
The barrels are fitted to the legendary Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action finished in vivid case colors and adorned with near full coverage Purdey bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding maker’s markings on the lockplates and underside. Features include bushed firing pins, Purdey’s patented single trigger, ribbed cocking indicators, finely gilded lockwork, and a tang mounted manual safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator. The gun is stocked with a beautifully figured walnut straight hand stock featuring carved drop points, gold “KAW” initials inlaid directly into the wood, and a Silver’s type recoil pad, along with a finely checkered beavertail forend with engraved iron and Anson release.
Accompanying the gun is a maker’s leather motor case with canvas cover, factory data sheet affixed inside the lid, turnscrews, cleaning accessories, and a spare set of strikers, completing an outstanding cased London Best double gun from the golden era of post-war British gunmaking.

Condition:

Very good overall, retaining 90% original blue finish with some brown hue on the barrels, 80% original dark case colors, some minor scattered spotting, mild handling evidence, some clouding in the wood finish, slightly oversized recoil pad, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine and the extra barrel set is very good.
