James Purdey & Sons Three Barrel Shotgun Set
Description:
Completed in 1923 and documented in Donald Dallas’ authoritative work “Purdey Gun & Rifle Makers: The Definitive History,” this exceptional 16 bore represents a remarkable fusion of classic London craftsmanship and modern master engraving. Originally built by the legendary London firm of J. Purdey & Sons, the gun was later elevated by internationally renowned Master Engraver Philippe Grifnee, whose extraordinary embellishment transformed the piece into a true bespoke work of art.
The gun is built with 26 inch blued chopper lump barrels, tube numbered 22248/49, featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave game rib signed, “J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH’S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.” The rib is further adorned with a gold inlaid “1” star at the breech along with a single gold band, while the barrels retain proper period London proof marks for 16 gauge.
The barrels are fitted to the brushed bright Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action, a hallmark of Purdey’s finest work, displaying masterfully executed floral scroll engraving throughout. Gold inlaid “J. PURDEY & SONS/LONDON” signatures appear on both lockplates, complemented by relief gold floral bouquets and gold highlighted detailing across the fences and top lever. Three exquisitely rendered relief gold game scenes further distinguish the gun, consisting of mallards descending onto water on the left lockplate, a pointing dog on the underside, and flushing quail on the right lockplate. Grifnee’s signature, “PH. GRIFNEE,” appears discreetly on the trigger plate beside the triggers.
Mechanically, the gun incorporates many classic London Best features including bushed firing pins, clipped fences, hidden third fastener, cocking indicators, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold “SAFE” indicator. The gun is stocked with a beautifully figured walnut straight hand stock featuring carved teardrop drop points, a multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and gold flourish accents, and a checkered bare butt in traditional English style.
Accompanying the gun are two additional matching numbered barrel sets, both carrying 20 gauge proofs while bored to 16 gauge. The “2” marked barrel set, tube numbered 38538/39, measures 26 inches, while the star marked set, tube numbered 54275/76, measures 30 inches. Also included is a fitted oak and leather Purdey case containing the gun and all three barrel sets along with spare strikers, cleaning accessories, and an oil bottle.
The star marked barrel set measures .668/.666 bore diameter nine inches from the breech with .026/.031 choke constriction and minimum wall thicknesses of .032/.033 inches. Stock dimensions include a 1 9/16 inch drop at comb, 2 3/8 inch drop at heel, 15 1/8 inch length of pull, cast-off configuration, and an overall weight of 6 pounds 4 ounces.
Condition:
Exceptionally fine as upgraded by Master Engraver Philippe Grifnee, retaining 99% blue, brushed bright, and gold finishes with minor handling evidence. The wood is very fine with a slight gap at the upper right finger, a few minor marks, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and the extra barrel sets are very fine.
