Pair of James Purdey & Sons 12 GA O/U's

Description:
This exceptional pair of J. Purdey & Sons shotguns, built for noted sportsman and collector Bartlett Burnap, exemplifies the highest standard of traditional London Best gunmaking. Designated “A” and “B,” the guns are fitted with blued chopper lump barrels featuring single bead foresights mounted on raised islands at the muzzles, concave game ribs with gold inlaid “1” and “2” designations at the breech, delicate scroll embellishment at the chamber ends, 2 3/4 inch chambers, London nitro proofs, automatic ejectors, and Teague thin wall choke tubes. The barrel flats of both guns are additionally engraved “BARTLETT BURNAP,” believed to have been executed at the time of completion.
The barrels are married to beautifully casehardened sidelock actions displaying masterfully executed Purdey bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding a tasteful arrangement of niter blued and polished pins. The lockplates are signed “J. Purdey & Sons.” in gold Gothic script, while the undersides are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons./London-England.” in matching gold inlay. The refined scrollwork continues seamlessly onto the blued top levers, engraved triggerguards, and lower tangs, the latter retaining the serial numbers in fine gold inlay. The engraving is signed “P. Chung” on the triggerplates, identifying the accomplished Purdey engraver responsible for the work. Both guns feature gold cocking indicators, double gold triggers, rolled right-hand triggerguards, and tang mounted automatic safeties with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicators.
Both shotguns are stocked in beautifully figured walnut with fine multi-point checkering, elegant teardrop drop points, black grip caps with engraved screws, gold ovals engraved “BB,” and leather covered recoil pads. The matching splinter forends are fitted with engraved and blued iron furniture incorporating gold inlaid Anson pushrod releases. Accompanied by nickel snap caps and a selection of spare Teague choke tubes.

CONDITION:
Gun A
Excellent overall, retaining 98% original blue finish with only some slight loss on the triggerguard/lower tang, 95% original casehardened finish with a few patches of slight muting, a scratch on the left of the upper barrel, and a few minor handling marks. The wood is very fine with a few scratches, a few pressure marks, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Gun B 
Excellent overall, retaining 99% professionally refurbished blue with slight thinning on the triggerguard/lower tang, 95% original case colors with a few patches of muting, minor handling evidence, some thinned varnish on the left of the stock, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Additionally there is a dent in the right of the bottom barrel mid-way through, which is visible in the bore wall. Mechanically excellent.
