Purdey boxlock D-Quality 12 ga. 28" Shot & Ball barrels with extra 30" Shot barrels
Description: Purdey Ball & Shot 12 gauge SxS boxlock 2 bbl set Shotgun.. Circa 1897 (or earlier) this is a “D Quality” boxlock that indicates all final fitting and finishing was done at Purdey. Barrels: The 28” paradox bored 12 gauge barrels are proofed accordingly with 2 ½” chambers; fitted into the solid rib are two folding blade sights and bright/shiny bores. The 30” shot only barrels have 2 ½” chambers, choke cylinder (R) and .022 IM (L) with a bright bore and .038” minimum wall thicknesses. Both sets of barrels probably have been re-black at some point in time. The frame: An Anson & Deeley’s patent boxlock action with extractors, double triggers and automatic safety. Here the finishes all appear to be original and in good condition. All but traces of the case colors are gone and the blue on the floor plate in all there but slightly fading. The trigger guard blue has faded to around 60%. The straight grip stock has a 14 11/16” LOP over the factory installed butt plate with what could be call modern dimensions: 1 ½” DAC and 2 1/8” DAH with 3/8” cast at the heel favoring a right hand shooter. It is a nicely balanced 6 lbs. 12 oz. with the 30” shot barrels; and it weighs 7 lbs. 1 oz. with the 28” paradox barrels in place. An Anson release allows the splinter forearm to be moved from barrel to barrel. The wood is completely intact and shows no signs of any cracks or repairs and is still proud of the metal. The finish is original and can probably stand to be freshened and the checkering touched-up. The case: Original to the gun that was made in Jan 1897 with the Paradox bore barrels and enclosed are the original loading tools, serial numbered bullet mold, case labels and some misc. paperwork. And the case is in very good condition. Only negative is that a later owner had their initials added to the escutcheon on the case. Mechanically this gun is in really fine condition; both barrels are on face, the top lever is still right of center, well in proof and ready to shoot. So this is a rather scarce find a Purdey Shot & Ball with a 2nd factory set of 30” smooth bore barrels with makers case and in fine condition for a gun that is 123 years old!! Then enclosed Purdey factory letter and ledger copy exactly match the configuration and dimensions of this gun which is astounding after all of this time. SN: 13802 SOLD Antique: Yes |
