SCARCE J Purdey of London 12 Ga Double Barreled Percussion Muzzleloader Shotgun from 1828 W/Letter
Description: Another “ESTATE” firearm listing brought to you from Dust 2 Dollars who prides themselves on showing the complete gun in high quality pictures along with a detailed description for your consideration. We offer you a Very “SCARCE” James Purdey of London 12 Gauge Double Barreled Percussion muzzleloader Game Gun (Shotgun) from 1828. The first thing I want to point out is that this shotgun is 193 years old! To find any gun that is almost 200 years old that has all matching numbers and in original configuration that still functions is very rare. The factory letter from Purdey is as follows. Gun No. 1509 was completed in 1828 and was listed as a 16 bore double barreled percussion game gun. The weight at completion was not recorded. It left the factory with 29” Damascus barrels both choked cylinder. The stock length as not recorded and was built for “Spearman”. It is to be noted in L. Patrick Unsworth’s The Early Prudery’s that the gun is said to gauge as a 12-bore which it does. It wears the original matching 29” Damascus serial numbered barrels and both mic right at .727. Purdey began producing his own barrels in the mid-1820’s. Purdey made barrel are stamped “JP” after 1826 which these are both correctly marked. Both barrels have excellent bores with both being bright with some vertical surface lines. Both show a few very small areas of very fine surface pitting. The Damascus pattern on both is vivid as you can see. There are no dents or pitting on either barrel. The rib is marked “JAMES PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON” on the concave rib. The original serial number matching ebony ramrod is in excellent condition with no cracks or repairs. The receiver is all silver in color with the factory engraving. Both locks are marked “PURDY” as shown and there is no pitting to either. The bottom metal and butt plate appear to have been refinished sometime in the past and are both in very fine condition. All of the screws are original to the gun and are in very fine condition. The stock has also been refinished and shows some nicely figured wood. Other than the finish it has not been altered and has no repairs. It shows a few very small and minor cracks from aging. To find this Purdey in this condition after nearly two centuries is seldom seen. The hammers and triggers function as they should make this Purdey a very nice survivor. SALE PENDING! This will be shipped taken down and fully insured UPS Ground to you where allowed with signature required for $100. It will ship in a double walled foam lined cardboard box that we have manufactured for us so that your gun arrives safe. Payment to be made by USPS Money Order or Cashier’s Check. All firearms come with a 3-day inspection from D2D’s. SOLD Antique: Yes Shotgun Gauge: 12 Gauge |
