The Rise of a Competitor and the Birth of the Express
For decades, the Wingmaster dominated the pump-action shotgun market. However, in the 1980s, competitors, particularly Mossberg with their Model 500, began to gain market share by offering a reliable and functional shotgun at a significantly lower price point.
In response to this competition, Remington introduced the Remington 870 Express in 1987. The goal of the Express was to offer the same legendary reliability and basic functionality of the Wingmaster but at a more affordable price.
