Remington 32S Trap Special 12 ga. O/U profusely engraved by Charles Jerred
Description: Remington model 32S, Trap Special, 12 gauge O/U shotgun. As you can see this 32 has been profusely engraved and greyed/coin metal finish. The pattern is rather complex and intricate with multiple styles of borders, floral leaf patterns and the vignettes showcasing the gold inlaid game scenes. The gold dogs and birds highlight Mr. Jerred’s extensive knowledge of the animals’ respective anatomies and characteristics. The gold “M” that is gold inlaid in a twig pattern on the trigger guard is the initial of Mr. J. F. Miller who ordered the engraving. The engraving was done in 1954 by noted gun engraver (of that time) Charles Jerred. Jerred had started in the gun business with Hunter Arms as a school dropout to support his family. Apparently, he learned engraving techniques at Hunter. Hunter Arms closed for business and Jerred went on to finish high school with a GED then enrolling in college eventually earning Master degrees in Physics and in Astronomy. Later to become a professor of Astronomy and even having an observatory named for him on the State University of New York campus. All the while supporting himself with his engraving and other sidelines. Mr. Jerred kept contemporaneous notes of all of the guns that he engraved and his reference on this gun lists, in addition to the gun being engraved in 1954 for Mr. Miller, that this was the most expensive engraving project that he had done! $400! All of the above information and much more was taken from and article that appeared in the Spring 2010 issue of the Double Gun Journal about this very gun. My copy of the magazine accompanies the this 32S. See last photo. Two sets of barrels: One set being 28” vent rib, choked: Skeet In/Skeet Out measuring .018”/.038” with .736” bores. With these dimensions these barrels are more like IM/XF and even with the .736” bores there is still over .030” nominal wall thicknesses. The second set is 30” solid rib, choke marked Full/Mod measuring .010”/.032” with factory .725” bores. Note the cone shape milling on these barrels, presumably for weight reduction! The stock and forearm are later add-ons and very well done. Handsomely figured Walnut and finished in a hand rubbed oil, then finished with well executed fleur-de-lis checkering. 14” LOP over the 1” Pachmayr recoil pad; 1 ½” DAC and 1 5/8” DAH with a very slight amount of right hand cast. Weighs 7 lbs. 15 oz. with the 28” barrels and 8 lbs. 2 oz. with the 30” barrels. Cased in an older Perazzi trap combo case. This is an exquisite example of very fine engraving by a little known American artist. $12,750.00 SN: 2633 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
