Rare Remington Model 31-TC 12 Gauge Trap Shotgun 30 " Full Choke Vented Barrel VG+
Description:
The Remington Model 31-TC (Target Grade) is a legendary, high-end pump-action trap shotgun produced between 1931 and 1949. Often celebrated as a masterclass in American craftsmanship, here is a look at the history, specifications, and features of the Model 31.
Historical Significance
The Winchester Rival: The Model 31 was Remington’s first successful side-ejection pump-action shotgun. Designed to directly compete with the dominant Winchester Model 1912, it superseded earlier, less successful Remington pump guns.
"Ball Bearing Action": It was famous for its incredibly smooth, slick action. It featured finely fitted internal parts that operated so seamlessly, Remington marketed it as having a "ball bearing action".
High Production Costs: Despite its immense popularity and smoothness, it was expensive to produce. Following World War II, Remington realized they needed a more affordable gun to manufacture and replaced the Model 31 with the famous Remington Model 870 in 1950.
Limited Production: Only about 196,000 Model 31s were made across all gauges (12, 16, and 20) before it was discontinued.
Specifications & TC Features
The 31-TC (Trap) was the top-of-the-line target grade model designed specifically for trap shooting:
Gauge: 12 Gauge
Barrel Length & Profile: 30 inches
Rib: Vented rib (Vented/Ventilated Rib) to help reduce barrel heat mirage and aid in faster target acquisition.
Choke: Typically choked "Improved Modified" (IM) or "Full" for the long-distance breaks required in trap.
Wood & Furniture: High-grade checkered walnut with a beavertail or extension-style forearm for better grip and control. It typically came with a Hawkins recoil pad and standard custom trap dimensions (longer pull length and specific drop-at-comb/heel).
