Remington Model 31 20ga with Factory Cutts Compensator, Mfg. October of 1948.
Description: The Remington Model 31 is, sad to say, mostly forgotten in the modern world. It was the Model 870 of its time. In January 1930, Crawford C. Loomis began working on a design for a pump-action shotgun to replace the older Models 17 and 29. Mr. Loomis received assistance from Charles H. Barnes and Oliver H. Loomis. In August of 1931, the new Model 31 shotgun was introduced to the U.S. market, selling for $48.95. The Model 31 became Remington’s first side-ejecting, single-loading, repeating shotgun. Two years later, in 1933, Remington introduced versions of the Model 31 chambered in 16ga and 20ga. Remington produced the Model 31 in a large number of variations and grades, totaling no less than 35 by the time production ended in 1949, by which time up to 189,243 had been produced, including roughly 117,739 in 12ga, 40,312 in 16ga, and 31,192 in 20ga. Remington began offering the Model 31 with the Cutts Compensator in April of 1939. As an interesting side note, during World War 2, Remington supplied 8,992 Model 31 shotguns to the U.S. Armed Forces, primarily for aerial gunnery training. The example shown here was produced in October of 1948. It is chambered in the 20-gauge and is in superb shape for its age (in October of 2024, it will be 76 years old!). It is believed to be a Model 31B “Special”, based upon the checkered pistol grip stock and forearm. The Cutts Compensator appears to be one genuinely installed by the factory, as the barrel lacks a choke marking on the lefthand side. This Model 31 seems to have been used on a semi-regular basis as it still retains most of the original finish. The majority of the finish loss appears to be on the magazine tube (wear from operating the pump), and the lower forward edges/bottom of the receiver (likely from being held there when trekking through the woods or brush). The lower rear butt plate screw does not tighten up, which likely indicates that the wooden shaft is worn out. The screw stays in place just fine, even against gravity, but the issue could be corrected with a little time and effort. There are two hairline cracks in the upper hand area of the stock’s wrist. Neither fully passes from one side to the other. Please see the photos. The forearm exhibits the usual handling wear. Bluing on the barrel is in superb shape, and there is little rust present. The bolt exhibits some light micro-pitting which could cleaned easily using some Flitz metal polish. There is some peening around the lefthand side pin hole (the center pin). Measuring from the breech end to just inside of the Cutts Compensator, the barrel’s length is around 21 inches. From the breech to the tip of the Spreader choke it is 25 inches. The bore is in superb shape with no rust or pitting present. SOLD Shotgun Gauge: 20 Gauge Manufacturer: Remington Arms Co., Inc.
