Remington UMC ~ Model 10-A ~ 12 Gauge

One of Remington's early models of pump-action shotguns, the Model 10 was the official designation for the Remington Pump Action Repeating Shotgun, dubbed in 1910. The shotgun design itself was manufactured starting in 1908, and the Model 10 was officially produced from 1910-1929. The Model 10 was sold in an array of grades and configurations, as well as special police/security riot guns and military shotguns used from World War I through the Vietnam Conflict. While the gun is a common historical shotgun to collect, it is also infamous for its complex design and thus can be a headache to maintain—notwithstanding its lack of parts availability in the modern day. This shotgun is a takedown Model 10-A, and its barrel has a faint 'B' marking, indicating it as a 'Special Grade' model. The Special Grade likely did not come with a ribbed/corncob forend, as is most common, but may have had figured wood furniture such as what is on this shotgun today. This shotgun's barrel date code indicates it was built in November of 1923 and was manufactured by the Remington-UMC factory—the same which was famous for churning out thousands of guns during both World Wars. This shotgun has a 30" barrel chambered for 12 gauge 2 ¾" shells, a textured scope rail on the receiver, and a plain silver bead at the end of the barrel. The barrel has a fixed choke of unknown/unmarked restriction. The furniture is a glossy walnut and has a vented rubber buttpad. The barrel is rust-free and has no pitting. The receiver and barrel exterior are in excellent shape with polished uniform bluing. The furniture is gloss-finished and in mostly good condition, though the stock has cracks on the bottom of the pistol grip near the receiver tang. Between the excellent appearance of the finishes and the age of the gun, it can be surmised that the gun has been re-blued and either had newly-made furniture fitted, or the wood has been refinished as well. The barrel also has a number stamped into it between the magazine tube and barrel which does not match the receiver. Thus, it is possible that the receiver and barrel are not original to each other. Regardless of this Model 10's status of originality, the shotgun is a very attractive example of a classic firearm design. One might never know the gun was built over 100 years ago!
