Rare E. Remington & Sons Model 1873, Grade-3, 12-Gauge in High Original Condition, SN 3221
Description: The Model 1873 was the first break-action cartridge double barrel shotgun manufactured by E. Remington. It is rare to find any shotgun of this period in such fine original condition, let alone a gun that was there at the beginning of Remington’s long history of manufacturing exceptional shotguns. The craftsmanship of the people who made this gun was truly exceptional. The stock is made of nicely-grained multi-tonal English walnut. It has an elegant English straight grip and near-perfect grain alignment. The wood-to-metal fit is precise, and the 28 lpi checkering retains its sharp points. The only significant signs of wear on the stock are scratches on the bottom of the left side of the butt near a dark stain. The finish is well protected by multiple coats of tung oil, which also bring out the inherent beauty of the wood. The drop at the comb is 1-7/8” and at the heel 2-7/8”. The length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the steel buttplate is 13-7/8”. The cast is neutral. The forend wood is of similar quality and checking as the stock. The ebony tip is a replacement. The engraving is deeply cut and remains in pristine condition. The receiver is unmarred and has the appropriate patina for 150-year-old shotgun. The face of the receiver has no pitting, which is rare for shotguns of the black-powder era and is an indication that the gun has seen little use. The nicely milled sidelocks are non-rebounding. The wood-to-metal fit is precise. The 30” barrels are made of fine laminated steel and have 2-3/4” chambers. Both barrels are choked improved cylinder (.010”). The bore diameters of both bores are .730” measured at 9” from the breech. The outside diameters of both barrels at the muzzle are .810”. The wall thicknesses of the right barrel (top/side/bottom) at 9” from the muzzle are .050/.048/.050 and at the middle of the barrel are .075/.073/.075. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .053/.055/.050 and .075/.075/.070, respectively. The bores are bright with some artifacts of light pitting. The exteriors of the barrels are in excellent condition. They have near-total coverage of the original browning, which has faded with time. The gun weighs 8 pounds 15 ounces. It locks up tightly and is on-face. Both triggers pull at approximately 8 pounds of pressure. All serial numbers, 3221, match. The listed price of the gun does not include shipping costs, which are paid by the buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on a number of occasions using RST low pressure shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by the Classic Shotshell Company in Friendsville, PA. However, as for any antique shotgun, and especially one a hundred and fifty years old, it is highly recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.
