Engraved GERMAN J.P. SAUER & SOHN SxS Top-lever HAMMER Shotgun
MILLER & VAL. GREISS Retailed 16 Gauge C&R Shotgun
Here we present a Miller & Val. Greiss Retailed John P. Sauer & Sohn Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa the early 1900s in Suhl, Germany.
The first Sauer company was founded in 1751 by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany, this locality being known as Waffenstqadt Suhl in the past because of its many gunmakers. In 1815 Johann-Gottlob Sauer started managing the firm and in 1835 Johann Paul Sauer became manager. It was in 1840 that Johann Paul and his son, Lorenz Sauer created the new name and trademark of J.P. Sauer & Sohn. J. P. Sauer and Sohn is the oldest recorded firearms manufacturer in Germany and is still active today.
The firm of Miller & Val. Greiss has its origins in a retail firm known as “Baader & Sohn”, started by Frans Xaver Baader around 1830. At some point in time, Johann Miller apparently took over the operation of the firm while keeping the Baader business name. Somewhere around 1871, Valentin Greiss became involved with Johann Miller in the Baader business and in 1872 it was officially announced that the firm would be known as “Miller and Val. Greiss”. No patents can be found for either Johann Miller or Valentin Greiss. After Greiss died in 1890 at the age of 55, the gunmaking business apparently was sharply curtailed or ended completely.
The overall condition is very good. Blue finish. The bores are smooth and semi-bright. The actions are strong. The serial numbers match throughout. “MILLER & VAL GREISS” is engraved and can be clearly read on the left lock. The right lock reads “KGL BAYER/HOFEUCHSENMACHER/MUNCHEN”, which means 1st Royal Barvaian Division, the name “Hofeuchsenmacher”, from Munich, Germany. The stock has a few dings from use and the horn butt plate is missing a small chip. The engravings on the locks and frame are detailed. A great German shotgun!
