Description: RARE .45-70 GOVT-12 Gauge Antique CHARLES DALY Engraved GERMAN DRILLING S&S Side Lever Combination Gun Made by J.P. Sauer & Sohn Here we present an antique Factory Engraved John Daly German Drilling in 12 Gauge and .45-70 GOVT, made by Sauer & Sohn in Germany circa the late 1880s. A Drilling, which is German for triplet, normally consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel but may possibly cover a much broader range of shapes and configurations, such as two rifled barrels and one smoothbore, three smoothbores, or three rifled barrels. This gun is marked “John Daly” on both sides of the back action lock plate. This gun was produced for Charles Daly by J.P. Sauer & Sohn, as he was known to produce this gun for Daly. Several other German manufacturers are known to produce these drillings, including Merkel, Simson & Company, along with several others. Since many drillings were made by small manufacturers, each maker would pick whichever layout they preferred, or whatever layout the customer ordered. The most common layout was like this one, a side-by-side shotgun with a centerfire rifled barrel centered on the bottom. The overall condition is nearing fine. Excellent action. All three bores are reflective (smooth shotgun bores and sharply rifled .45-70 bore). Solid stock with an expected amount of wear, minor dents and dings. Legible, clear markings. “CHARES DALY” is engraved on both locks. “FINE DAMASCUS” marked Damascus barrels. Well-defined engravings on the frame, trigger guard, and hammers. A nice German combination gun that one can imagine taking fowl and larger animals such as a stag in the same hunt! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 30 inches.
