#14746, Gebruder Merkel, Suhl - Germany: A 410 Merkel from Suhl in Model 301E Made in 1929 on a Best 300 Series Action with a Kersten top lock plus double underlugs with double bite, A High Quality O/U Boxlock Game Gun that was imported by A. F. Stoeger Inc. in New York and so marked, They were the Sole American Agent at the time and so marked, 28” Ejector Krupp Steel Solid Rib barrels, .407 .027 & .029" (Extra Full & Extra Full), 3” chambers, Single trigger, Scalloped frame, Cocking indicators, Bolstered frame, Slim game forend, Pistol grip stock at 14 1/16 x 1 3/4 x 2 9/16" over a checkered horn buttplate with the Merkel logo, Steel trigger guard, 85% coverage of period scroll engraving with some deeper relief floral on the bolsters, Nice wood with nice color & contrast, 3 locking screws on key screws, No sling eyes, Double Ivory beads on the solid rib, 410 game gun weight at 5 lbs. 12 oz., After 87 years it remains in exceptional condition with 94% barrel blue, The stock finish is at 92%, The checkering is at 97%, The bores are excellent plus and look like they did in 1929. It is difficult to find a better conditioned 1929 O/U from the great Merkel family from the renowned city of Suhl. In the hand; the balance, the feel, the craftsmanship, the engraving, the wood, the grace and style make it a very nice shooting device.
