MASSIVE 8 Gauge Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun 14 1/2 lb Market Punt Gun 8GA SxS Muzzleloader 37" Bbls
Description: Massive 8 Gauge Percussion Double Barrel Market Hunter's Shotgun, 8 GA, mfg. circa 1850's. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as they could on a daily basis to sell to local markets and hotels. This example is particularly large and in fantastic condition considering the harsh environments market guns were generally exposed to. Monstrous heavy Belgian proofed Damascus barrels measure 37 1/8" long and 2 ¾" wide across the breech fitted with an iron bead front sight. Inside diameter of the bores at the muzzles measures approximately .862" and the upper rib is inscribed “FINE TWIST”. The locks and furniture are in the white with the barrels showing a smooth dark gray/brown patina with faded Damascus pattern visible. The furniture is nicely engraved throughout with floral patterns and a fierce dog on the triggerguard. Robust stock features a checkered wrist and has a very pleasing rich color with a thin coat of varnish applied long ago much of which has worn away. Remarkably there are no chips, cracks, or repairs. Original engraved iron buttplate, triggerguard, and forend tip, and barrel wedge with brass escutcheons. Original brass tipped wood ramrod. The forward pipe is original, rear pipe is missing. The thumb knurling on the right hammer is slightly smaller than the knurling on the left which I am going to say is due to being hand engraved as both hammers otherwise match each other perfectly. Both actions are smooth and crisp and function very nicely. Left hammer is loose and screw replaced. Both nipples are clean modern replacements. Barrels appear sound with no dents and good ribs. Untouched bores show moderate/heavy blackpowder frosting and superfine pinprick pitting throughout with a few scattered scrapes around the circumference but overall I think they would be quite serviceable with a proper scrubbing. Gun is very heavy at 14 lbs 8 oz. A very impressive piece of history from the old days of commercial market hunting! Doubles this big are hard to find. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique arms" will also include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions. Buyers must be 21 years of age or older and have no felony convictions to purchase antique arms. Returned items must be received in the same condition as originally shipped - cleaning, disassembly, alteration, or damage of any kind will void inspection privileges. Occasionally a post-1898 firearm from my personal collection may be sold under this account and any such transaction is a personal sale in no way affiliated with Jeremiah Johnson Trading.
