Here we present an antique W.H. Hamilton Stagecoach Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, made circa 1890, in Liege, Belgium. Coach shotguns as we know them today came about in the mid-19th Century, but their roots go back to flintlock blunderbusses in the 1600s. The shotgun was and remains a devastating close range weapon, ideal for defense. The barrels were typically shortened, making them even handier, more packable, and maneuverable. Coach guns have also been known as “Messenger Guns” and the phrase “riding shotgun” has been carried down from this time. Messenger, transportation, railroad and express companies, among others chose the short double barreled shotgun to defend their stagecoaches, wagons and trains against gangs, bandits and Native Americans as they crisscrossed the United States.
This specimen is in good overall condition. The metal has an even, aged patina. The markings are legible. The checkered walnut stock has been worn with use. The bores are in fair condition. The action is functional.
