Alfred Clayton 12 Bore Hammergun with 30” Nitro Damascus to Damascus Sleeved Barrels and Unique Hammers
Description: Alfred Clayton of 155 High Street in Southampton produced this handsome and very interesting hammergun in the 1870’s. The records are unclear as to whether he was a gunsmith or a sporting goods dealer. This hammer double, no. 1560, was most likely brought in from Birmingham and it is a quality specimen of that city’s burgeoning guntrade. We do know that he originally started out in Limington but later purchased a business from William Burnett in Southampton. *** At first glance this is just another example of a well-made provincial hammergun but looking more closely you will see that the original Damascus barrels have been sleeved with highly figured Damascus tubes! In addition the hammers are of a very unique design in that the firing pins are attached to the hammer and extend all the way through the fences to the breech face! Note too the gold shields set in the stock near the nipples and the profuse and well executed engraving. The gun has double triggers, extractors and a rotary underlever. It is in very good mechanical condition and just needs a little attention to the cosmetics of the stock. Weight is 6lb 13oz. *** The 30” nitro “Damacus to Damascus” sleeved barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. They were proofed for 3 Ton loads in Birmingham 1985 – 89. Both the barrel flats and the tubes show the Birmingham nitro proof mark. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib that is inscribed “Alfred Clayton 155 High St. Southampton.” The barrels are highly figured and were rebrowned sometime in the recent past. There are a few handling marks visible. The bores are shiny and there is some very mild pitting visible if you look closely. Wall thickness is excellent. The right barrel is bored 0.710 and has a constriction of 0.;000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037. The left barrel is also bored 0.710 and has a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is also 0.037. This choking and it’s great handling characteristics make this a great gun for upland game or clays. *** The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut. The checkering has been refreshed. There are a few handling marks from normal usage but there are also a few larger dents on the top of the wrist near the topstrap(see photo). The wood is sound and a good gunsmith can easily repair them and make the whole stock sparkle. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” including a very thin steel lightly engraved buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2-1/8”. Very slightly cast-on this stock can be easily bent to accommodate a new owner. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
