Cogswell & Harrison Sidelock Non-Ejector with Lever-Cocking Toplever and 30” Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: Handsome, great handling, collectable and somewhat rare Gibbs & Pitt patent lever-cocking Cogswell & Harrison 6-pin sidelock non-ejector with highly figured nitro Damascus barrels. Cased in its original oak & leather case with maker’s label the gun is in good mechanical condition. Coggy no. 11869 was made in 1883 and it appears on plate 4 of Cogswell & Harrison's book(see photo). High grade gun with gas ports, gold line cocking indicators, auto safety, double triggers, Deeley forearm latch, and original horn buttplate. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 10oz. The highly figured 30” nitro Damascus barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib which is inscribed “Cogswell & Harrison. 142 New Bond Street. London”. The finish is highly figured and nicely browned but does show some wear and scratches. The bores are in very good condition with great wall thickness but there is some very minor pitting typical of the era. The right barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.021 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.009 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. These barrels are “grouse choked” for driven game with the right barrel intentionally tighter choked for the initial first shot at a more distant target which aids in keeping the stock on the shooter’s face for a quicker 2nd shot at close range. The original straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured French walnut and has its original horn buttplate. The checkering has been refreshed. The stock shows a number of small handling marks but just needs some tender loving care to restore it to its former glory. Stock dimensions are 14-3/4” by 1-3/8” by 2”. Slightly cast off for the righthand shot. Despite some obvious finish wear this collectable lever-cocking Cogswell & Harrison sidelock is in good mechanical condition. It is a great handling and rare game gun and well worth some modest investment to restore the finish on the stock. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description.
