Stephen Grant 12 Bore Sidelock with 30” Nitro Damascus Barrels and Sidelever Opening – No. 2 of a Pair
Description: Handsome Stephen Grant sidelock non-ejector with highly figured 30” nitro Damascus barrels and the prized sidelever opening. Grant 5480 was made in 1884 on the unique Grant & Adams patent 2101 of 1883. It is a normal sidelock but while both locks cock the tumbler on opening the Right spring is tensioned on opening and the Left on closing. Works smoothly and easily. It has double triggers, auto safety, new leather recoil pad and is handsomely engraved. Refurbished in the UK the barrels were re-browned, furniture re-blacked, stock refinished and checkering refreshed. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 12oz. The 30” nicely figured Damascus barrels were nitro proofed in London in 1996. Chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are readily available in the US from Clays Ammo, Game Bore, and RST Shells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib which is inscribed “Stephen Grant 67-1/2 St. James’s Street London”. The right barrel is bored 0.737 with a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.742 and has a constriction of 0.018 for Light Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.020. The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut which have been professionally refinished with checkering refreshed. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4 including a 7/8” leather recoil pad by 1-3/8” by 2-1/8”. Slightly cast off for the righthand shot. Sidelock Grants are known for their beautiful engraving and fluted fences. Grants with sidelever opening are easy to use and open up the top strap for stunning engraving. This is a great handling English double from a storied maker for clays and upland game. Don’t let this unique and handsome double get away. NOTE: The photographs are part of the description.
