J. MacPherson & Sons – 2” GAME GUN, HEAVY 1 1/8 OZ. PROOF, vintage firearms
Description: General Specs: J. MacPherson & Sons, c1950, 12 Gauge, 5lbs. 11oz., Chokes F/F, LOP 14 3/4", DAH 2 7/16", DAC 1 5/8" Serial Number: 90785 When examining British and European 2” GAME GUNS built to be superlight upland guns, you will find they are generally proofed for 7/8 ounce or 1-ounce loads. The concept of building a 12-bore shotgun with 2” chambers is to provide a gun that is lighter in weight than a similar 20ga. gun with the same dynamic handling characteristics, but with a .729” bore. Why you ask? Because a light 20ga. equivalent load in a larger diameter tube creates a shot pattern with extremely short shot strings which equates to more pellets arriving on target simultaneously than in a similar smaller diameter bore. This means you hit a crossing target in a more lethal manner, with more pellets, than a 20ga. with a longer shot string. AND most 2” game guns weigh less than a typical 20ga. gun…so the best of carry weight with the best of lethality. Once you handle one and take game in the uplands you realize the advantage. This gun, a John MacPherson and Sons created in 1950, is a supreme example of a Scottish 2” game gun, weighing just 5lbs. 11oz. and balanced perfectly just ahead of the hinge pin. The gun demonstrates the high quality of workmanship that was presented by the British gunmakers (this one likely made by Skimin and Woods and labeled by MacPherson) as shown in the hand engraved action and trigger guard, the beautiful English walnut stock, the perfection in the hand-fit metal and wood. Review the extensive photos and you will see a fine quality Scottish gun in very high original factory condition. The 27 5/8” barrels retain 99% blue, is fitted with a raised Churchill style rib, both ribs tight, barrels tight on hinge and breech face, bores shiny mirror with no dents, and still in proof with the 2” chambers PROOFED FOR HEAVY 1 1/8 OUNCE LOADS. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN, HAVING THE ACTION AND FOREND IRON STRIPPED, ULTRASONIC CLEANED, ALL PARTS INSPECTED FOR FUNCTION AND INTEGRITY, THEN LUBRICATED AND REASSEMBLED, NOW CARRYING A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY, A $450 SERVICE IN OUR SHOP. The action retains 90% factory case color, is adorned with 80% coverage of beautiful English scroll, hand cut by true artists and has excellent screws and mechanics. The ejectors are strong and timed, triggers are crisp, and the trigger guard is excellent as well. The stocks are well figured with perfect wood to metal fit.
