Fit for Royalty Engraved and Sliver Wire Inlayed Henry Nock 10 Bore Masterpiece of Gunmaker Craftsmanship
Description: Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are tremendously proud to offer this seldom encountered exquisitely detailed tribute to the craftsmanship of England's Henry Nock. Several English gunmakers used "gunmaker to his majesty" in their seld descriptions, but I would say that this early scattergun is proof. Everywhere you look, there is attention to detail. The lock is nicely engraved, featuring a dog and bird. The hammer forms a creature, complete with eyes and scales. The lock is offset by extensive silver wire inlay on the left side. The trigger guard bears a familiar looking crest, and an elaborate "pineaplle" to the front of it. The crest behind the action surely identifies the original owner. The heel of the butt plate has an intricate decoration, as does the ramrod inlet to the forend. The ramrod is held in place by a groove cut in the barrel guide under the muzzle. The hammer cups the nipple, yet has a relief that directs any pressure away from the shooter. The 31 1/2 inch barrel begins as octagonal, then doubles the facets, then a "wedding ring" marks the final transition to round. The bore is also surprisingly good. My photos simply do not capture the true beauty of this important firearm. Everyone who has examined it did not want to put it down. She is in remarkable condition for being about 150 years old. The wonderful texture of the barrel reminds me of a cannon barrel. The highly figured French walnut is amazing. About the only detraction is that the stock had been shortened, then restored to its original 13 3/4 inch length of pull. It doesn't amout to much, and a good stock man could make that line disappear. What we have here is a true expression of one of the world's best gunmakers, from an era when no time limits were set and money was no object. If you have been looking for a true work of a craftsman's art, and want something that royalty likely once owned, then look no further. SOLD Antique: Yes |
