Vintage 28-Gauge Double Barrel Sidelock Hammergun Mfg. by the American Gun Co., New York
Description: This 28-gauge double barrel sidelock hammergun was manufactured circa 1920 by the American Gun Co., which was part of the H&D Folsom Arms Co. Group, at its plant in Norwich, CT. The American Gun Co. models ‘Small Bore No. 28’ and ‘Small Bore No. 44’ (and the successor models ‘Midget Field No. 28’ and ‘Midget Field No. 44’) were the last newly-designed double barrel sidelock hammer shotguns introduced in America in the 20th Century. This gun it is a member of a uniquely American class of shotguns: the utility double barrel shotgun designed to be affordable to the average rural and small-town family in the first half of the 20th Century. This gun was most likely purchased as a first shotgun for a young man to use to hunt rabbits, squirrels, and small game birds. As reconditioned, it is still very capable in this role. The 26” fluid-steel barrels on this gun are chambered for 2-3/4” cartridges. They are choked cylinder and improved modified. The bore diameters of both barrels measured at 9” from the breech are .555”. The outside diameter of the right barrel at the muzzle is .640” and the left .630”. The minimum wall thicknesses of both barrels are .040”. The sidelocks are coil-spring powered. Unlike the sidelocks on some much more expensive brands, they have an independent seer spring. The sideplate is 3-1/2” long. The stock and forend wood are made of a semi-hard wood, such as cherry or birch, and have 16-point checkering. The LOP is 13-1/4” to the end of the original rubber buttplate; the DAC is 1-3/4”; and the DAH is 2-3/4”. The gun weight 4 pounds 10 ounces. The right trigger pulls at 5 pounds and the left at 6 pounds. The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on the range and in the field using standard 2-3/4 target shells. However, as for any antique or vintage shotguns, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing. Price: $1,900.00 Contact Seller |
