Massive 8 Gauge Flintlock Punt Gun w/ Henry Nock Screwless Lock 13.5lbs Antique Market Hunter 8GA Muzzleloader Shotgun
Description: Rare & Massive Flintlock Punt/Market Gun with Henry Nock Screwless Lock, 8 GA, mfg. circa first quarter 19th century. This is a realy neat and unusual market gun which has been a part of my big-bore collection for many years now and I am convinced it is unique as I have never seen another fowling piece constructed with a rare Nock screwless lock. Large-bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial market hunters who needed to harvest as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis for resale to local hotels and markets. This example was made in the upper New England/Canadian coastal region and has survived in wonderful original condition. The Birmingham proofed barrel measures 39 3/16" long and over 1 5/8" wide across the breech. Inside diameter of the bore at the muzzle is approximately .840" and there is no provision for a front sight. The first 20" of the barrel, over half it's length, is octagon transitioned to round at a wedding band turning. Legendary British ordnance maker Henry Nock, perhaps most famous for his seven-barreled Naval volley gun, patented his enclosed screwless lock in 1786 and the design enjoyed much success throughout the early Napoleonic era. This innovative design keeps all of the parts enclosed within the lock which is riveted together without the use of screws. The lock built into this gun would have been salvaged from a British military pistol or small carbine and remains original excepting for two rivets which have been replaced with screws during the gun's working life (one screw head damaged). The lock is clearly marked “H NOCK” below the British ordnance broad arrow. Touch hole is likewise original and unaltered. Overall the metal has a dark plum/gray patina with fine surface pitting scattered throughout. The heavy hardwood stock is of massive proportions having a 2 ½" tall wrist and measuring 2 ¾" wide across the barrel tang. The wood shows heavy, smooth wear overall with a lovely untouched blackened patina. There is a stable old 4" crack on the left side of the butt, a 2" crack on the right side, and a few stable 2 ½" cracks opposite the lock ahead of the lock bolt. One very tight old worn 5" crack under the forearm. Made without a buttplate as was common for big guns from this region it is fitted with an iron triggerguard and two barrel wedges. Original iron ramrod with turned brass pipes. The action is smooth and secure and functions flawlessly. Frizzen tightly shuts and opens perfectly. The gun weighs a hefty 13 lbs 5 oz. A fantastic and very unusual early market gun - you will not see another! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
