Massive Best Quality Engraved Norris & Brother Baltimore 6 Gauge Percussion Coach Gun Shotgun *RARE*
Description: *SALE PENDING* Extremely Rare & Fine Norris & Brother, Baltimore, Maryland, Engraved 6 Gauge Percussion Coach Shotgun, 6 Ga, mfg. circa 1850's. This menacing hand cannon comes directly from my long time collection of big bore shotguns and is a totally unique one of a kind piece. Picture's really don't do justice to it's size, quality, and condition. Originally the gun would have been made to order for a very wealthy Southern sportsman for long range goose hunting however early on in it's life the barrel, which probably measured 40" or more in length, was professionally shortened to just 15" and the butt correspondingly weighted so that the gun is perfectly balanced and can be wielded with one hand. Given the type of person who would have owned a gun like this I can only surmise that it was modified either for family coach guard or perhaps a wealthy lad on horseback going off to fight in the Civil War. Regardless it is definitely a self defense weapon no longer meant for hunting waterfowl. Norris & Brother are one of the more obscure Baltimore gun makers yet when specimens do surface they are consistently found to be of best quality. An ad printed in the Baltimore Sun dated October 12, 1858 may shed light on the true origins of their work as it suggests that Norris & Brother guns were in fact made to order for the firm by none other than Westley Richards who was and is still considered to be one of the world's premier gunmakers. In spite of measuring just 31 1/8" long overall the gun weighs a hefty 10 lbs 13 oz. The barrel has been shortened at the leading edge of the wedding band turning flush with the tip of the forearm and the inside diameter of the bore measures .937". The muzzle is perfectly crowned and brass sighting bead centered with all work professionally done in period. The top of the barrel is inscribed "NORRIS & BROTHER MAKERS BALTIMORE" with "NORRIS & BROTHER" inscribed on the lock and serial number "163" marked on the lower tang. The breech is fitted with a platinum blow plug and the gun is beautifully engraved throughout with exceptional scrollwork. The metal has a mottled salt & pepper color overall which in spite of what the photos may imply is actually quite smooth. The stock is nicely figured and features a very finely checkered wrist and forearm with a nickel silver nameplate escutcheon. The checkering is sharp and the wood retains much of it's original varnish with an attractively toned dark color. Aside from a 4" long sliver missing along the edge of the forearm forward the lock and a tight 2" grain check on the left side of the butt the wood has survived in excellent condition with no further issues. Engraved iron buttplate, triggerguard, barrel tang, wedge escutcheons, and ramrod entry pipe with silver lock screw escutcheon and breech plate. The ramrod is absent and the forend cap was likely discarded at the time of alteration. The tip of the hammer spur has broken away and missing. The action is perfectly crisp and functions flawlessly. The nipple is a perfect original. Clean and smooth bore with only minimal blackpowder frosting. A very special and most impressive big bore American shotgun. You will never see another like it! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
