Massive C.S. Shattuck 8 Gauge Single Shot Breechloading Shotgun Punt Gun - NEAT Antique 8GA Market Gun!
Description: Rare C.S. Shattuck, Hatfield, Massachusetts, American Trigger Action 8 Gauge Single Barrel Market Hunter's Shotgun/Punt Gun, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1880's/1890's. This neat old 8 Gauge comes from my long time collection of big bore shotguns and is a true piece of market gunning history with tons of character. It is very rough BUT it's condition tells a story and is what defines it as a true market gun. Whoever the old gunner was that owned it used it every single day and when something broke he repaired it and kept going. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapon of choice for commercial hunters who made their living supplying local hotels and markets with as much waterfowl as they could harvest on a daily basis and it's obvious the owner of this gun needed it to survive. The barrel measures 35 3/16" long and is fitted with a brass bead front sight. The metal shows heavy wear overall with a dark chocolate patina and finely textured surface freckling throughout. Likewise the stock is heavily worn with a dark untouched appearance. The wrist has been broken and repaired numerous times with a brass band and two large tacks added in period. Presently it is stable with old cracking and a large chip missing along the left side of the upper tang. Further there are stable old cracks ahead of the butt and the toe has been carved flat to better stabilize the gun in a punt boat for firing from the prone position. The original buttplate has been replaced with two old leather pads nailed in place. The tip of the hammer spur has broken off which is commonly seen on this model. The hammer securely clicks back and holds but there is no mainspring tension. The original firing pin is present and freely moving. The forward trigger would have originally opened the barrel but when the latch broke the old hunter riveted a brass collar around the action which he could slide forward to open and slide back to hold it closed. Primitive but whatever works! The barrel is very loose at the hinge with considerable wobble in all directions. Untouched bore is very dirty but doesn't appear to have any pits or gouges. Weight is a hefty 12 lbs 3 oz. I sincerely hope whoever buys this gun doesn't attempt any restoration and just enjoys it as a relic of the bygone days of commercial market hunting. It really tells a story of an old hunter who truly lived by his gun! Provenance: Dean Schimetschek collection, from the Eastern Connecticut shore - Niantic area.
