Massive Engraved English G. Heminway 8 Gauge Double Barrel Breechloading Shotgun 14 lbs *RARE* Antique 8GA SxS
Description: *SALE PENDING* Massive Rare G. Heminway Engraved English 8 Gauge Double Barrel Breechloading Market Hunter's Shotgun, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1880's. Large bore shotguns were the weapon of choice for commercial hunters who made their living supplying local hotels and markets with as much waterfowl as they could harvest on a daily basis. Naturally due to the harsh conditions in which these guns were extensively used few have survived. This example is of substantial size and quality and remains in wonderful original condition overall. The Birmingham proofed damascus barrels measure 32 1/8" long and 3" wide across the breech! They are fitted with a brass bead front sight and inscribed along the upper rib "G. HEMINWAY. LONDON. DAMASCUS STEEL". The gun is profusely engraved throughout in tight English scrolls with "G. HEMINWAY" inscribed on both locks. I believe the name "Heminway" to be a trade name likely used by one of the big Birmingham firms such as J. P. Clabrough. The barrels retain 85%+ vivid original browned damascus pattern while the frame and locks show faint mottled traces of case color mostly turned silver fading to plum. The stock features a checkered wrist and forearm with a nickel silver shield nameplate. The wood has a lovely rich untouched color with a blackened patina forming. There is a secure tight 1 1/2" crack behind each lock and a small chip at the tip of the barrel tang but otherwise the wood is quite nice with no further damage or repair. Original checkered horn buttplate shows moderate wear with no chips or cracks while the fluted horn pistolgrip cap has some minor surface marring along the forward edge. The forend tip is missing. Both hammers are matching originals with the right showing a period brass braze repair. Both actions are perfectly crisp and function flawlessly featuring rebounding safeties. Original firing pins are freely moving and the cartridge extractor functions properly. Top-lever release securely opens and latches the barrels shut with typical light play against the frame when closed. Matching serial number "1227" marked on the barrels, forearm, and water table. Relatively bright bores with moderate blackpowder frosting throughout and some small pits scattered toward the muzzles. The barrels appear sound with no dents and solid ribs. The gun weighs just a tad over 14 lbs and is well balanced with most of the weight over the breech. A very handsome and unmolested high quality 8 Gauge double that will make a statement in any gun room! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
