Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Massive & Very Rare 6 Gauge Percussion Double Barrel Market Hunter's Shotgun, Identified Owner, 6 Ga, mfg. ca. 1850. Directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns. These intimidating weapons were preferred by commercial market hunters who made their living supplying local hotels and markets with as much waterfowl as they could harvest on a daily basis. Pictures do not do this gun justice. It is absolutely massive weighing 15 lbs 3 oz and remains totally original top to bottom. I spent years collecting big bore shotguns and I can tell you it is extremely difficult to locate a true double barrel 6 Gauge. The Belgium proofed Damascus barrels measure 36 3/8" long and feature a brass bead front sight with a Platinum banded breech. The inside diameter of the bores measures approximately .950". The upper rib is stamped "TWIST" followed by the inscription "J. H. Tomlinson Delawre". James H. Tomlinson of Duck Creek Hundred in Kent, Delaware, was born December 11th, 1819 and died June 17th, 1899. Records list him as a "laborer" and show that his trade changed throughout the years. Likely he supported himself by market hunting between jobs using this very gun. The locks and furniture are nicely engraved throughout and the metal has a smooth worn dark plum patina with vivid Damascus pattern visible along the barrels. The stock shows an equally untouched worn finish and features a checkered wrist with two barrel wedges. The top of the wrist had been broken during the era of use and neatly repaired with two inlaid brass plates which have nearly turned black with age. Aside from this period repair and a few very small old chips around the locks the wood remains solid with no further issues. Original iron buttplate with engraved Nickel Silver triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, and forend tip. Original iron ramrod pipes with massive original brass tipped wood ramrod equipped with worm. Both hammers are matching originals (the right spur having been bent forward slightly). Both actions are crisp and functions flawlessly, although the right hammer indexes slightly farther back than the left. Both nipples are clean originals. The barrels are rock solid with no dents and good original ribs. Doubles of this size simply do not turn up for sale and to find one with added history makes this a real prize.
