10 Gauge by Famous Southern Civil War Sword Maker
Here we present an antique Double Barrel 10 Gauge Percussion Shotgun, made circa 1850. The top of the barrel is marked “James Conning Mobile Ala”. James Conning was a silversmith and merchant of fine goods in Mobile, Alabama from about 1840 through the American Civil War. He originally hailed from New York City, but truly found his fortune in Mobile. According to R.E. Neville, Jr., Conning was inspired by Mobile’s martial spirit during the Mexican-American War to begin providing military related items, including swords and firearms, which he acquired in large part from the northern states. When the Civil War began, he knew his suppliers would no longer be able to provide him with merchandise. As a result, he set up shop making swords, and became one of the few makers of Confederate swords. Very few pieces of his merchandise remain, especially firearms marked by him.
This piece is in relic condition. Metal is dark. Markings on the barrel are legible. The stock is worn, but solid and dark with age. The left lock is absent. The right lock holds cock and has good spring tension.

Barrel is 33-1/2 inches in length.
