TROY, NY Antique SxS Rifle-Shotgun by NELSON LEWIS Excellent Frontier Gear Circa the 1840s!
Description: TROY, NY Antique SxS Rifle-Shotgun by NELSON LEWIS
Excellent Frontier Gear Circa the 1840s!
Here we present an antique Nelson Lewis Side by Side Combination Percussion Rifle & Shotgun, manufactured circa the mid-19th Century in Troy, New York. Combination guns are not nearly as common as single shot guns dedicated to one type of ammunition. These were supremely handy firearms that would have been at home in the field for hunting virtually any sort of game and also be used to defend the homestead or wagon train.
The barrel is marked “N. LEWIS”. Nelson Lewis was a rifle maker working out of Troy, New York, from the 1840s through the 1880s. He was known for his quality wares. Lewis was born in 1811 near Speigletown, NY. The first leg of his career was as a professional market hunter and he was apparently a very good shot. He then apprenticed under J.M. Caswell of Lansingburg, NY. He opened his own gun-making and gunsmithing business circa 1843. He is said to have favored gain-twist rifling so much that he couldn’t be persuaded to do otherwise in his barrels. Lewis remained in business until about the 1880s.
This incredible firearm features a rifled bore on the right and a smooth bore on the left. Each barrel has its own lock and trigger. The rifle’s trigger has a single set mechanism built in for precision shots. There is a single blade front sight in between the barrels, as well as an adjustable rear sight. In the tang is mounted an adjustable fine peep sight for the longer rifle shots. A fantastic set up!
The overall condition is very good. The bores are in very good condition with the rifled bore having strong rifling. The right action (rifle) remains strong. The single set aspect of the trigger needs adjustment. The left action (shotgun) falls to half-cock and needs adjustment.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 30 inches.
Caliber: .44 Rifle (right)/.71 Smoothbore (left)
Overall condition as seen in photos.
