William Schaefer 12 ga. Double. Extremely Rare in Excellent Original Condition.
Description:
William Schaefer 12 gauge double in extremely fine ORIGINAL condition. William Schaefer had a small shop ln Boston MA.
His guns were custom made to customer specifications. No two Schaefer guns were exactly alike. Although most of his guns were devoid of engraving, his belief was that engraving often disguised the quality of the gun. His guns were of the highest quality.
Often the wood was spectacular as is the case of this example. I suspect he imported his barrels "in the white' and finished and fitted them in his shop. This gun has Bernard Damascus which at the time were the most expensive barrels available.
The wood is gorgeous Turkish Walnut.
The gun retains 95 % of all its original finishes. The case coloring is muted and faded with age. Blueing is thin on trigger guard.
Damascus pattern is 95% and finish is 95%. I believe it is original based on the overall condition of the gun.
Bores are Bright and Shiny, Stock has some scratches and handling marks.Butt plate is non original and the gun would benefit from a quality brown leather pad.
