How do LeFever Side Lock shotguns compare to Parker and Fox shotguns
Among collectors of classic American doubles, a genuine LeFever sidelock is usually considered fully the equal of—and in some ways more innovative than—most Parkers and Foxes. The answer depends on whether you're judging designshooting qualitiescollectibility, or market value.

Where LeFever Stands Out
Daniel Myron Lefever was one of the great innovators of American gunmaking and is often credited as a pioneer of the hammerless shotgun. His guns featured ingenious internal mechanisms and adjustable features that were ahead of their time. Many historians consider Lefever doubles among the most mechanically sophisticated American side-by-sides ever built.
A high-grade Lefever (E, F, G, H, Optimus, etc.) can exhibit craftsmanship every bit as fine as comparable Parkers and Foxes.
Compared to Parker
Parker Brothers shotguns generally command the strongest collector following today. They earned a reputation for exceptional durability, excellent engraving, and consistent quality across grades. Many collectors regard Parker as the benchmark American double.
Compared with Parker:
  • LeFever is generally viewed as more mechanically inventive.
  • Parker is usually viewed as more robust and historically influential.
  • Parker values tend to be higher because of collector demand.
  • High-grade examples of either are top-tier American doubles.
Compared to Fox
Ansley H. Fox designed the Fox as a relatively simple, strong boxlock action. Fox shotguns are famous for their balance and handling characteristics. Many upland hunters consider them among the finest field guns ever made.
Compared with Fox:
  • LeFever has the more complex and innovative action.
  • Fox is mechanically simpler and easier to understand.
  • Foxes are often praised for exceptional balance and "carryability."
  • Collector interest is very strong for both, though Fox generally has broader recognition.
If You Are Buying One Today
For a shooter who appreciates vintage American doubles:
  • A sound high-grade LeFever can be a tremendous value because it often costs less than a comparable Parker.
  • Parker usually offers the strongest resale and collector market.
  • Fox is often favored by hunters who prioritize field handling and balance.
  • Many experienced collectors would rank them roughly like this:
    • Best collector prestige: Parker
    • Best engineering innovation: LeFever
    • Best handling/field reputation: Fox
That said, condition, originality, barrel condition, stock dimensions, and grade matter far more than the name on the receiver. A high-condition Lefever G Grade is often a better gun—and a better buy—than a worn Parker or Fox of similar vintage.
If you have a specific LeFever model (E Grade, F Grade, G Grade, Optimus, DS, etc.), I can give a much more detailed comparison and approximate collector value.
