The model 583 shotguns are most known for the the curious recall of all 12-gauge variants by Sears & Roebuck in 1998, well after J.C. Higgins as a company closed their doors. The recall cited issues with the bolt latch assembly which could possibly cause the blot assembly to be ejected out the back of the receiver and striking the shooter.
