PURDEY 12- NEW 25" Bbls by CHURCHILL in 1953- EXC. BARRELS & EXTREMELY STOUT WOOD- 6 Lbs. 5 Oz.- NICE WOOD Description: #13306, J. Purdey & Sons: A Bar Action Sidelock Extractor 12 Bore Game Gun Made 1889 and now with 25" Extractor barrels installed by Churchill in 1953 & so marked "New Barrels By Churchill (Gunmakers) Ltd. - Orange Street Gunworks, Leicester Square, London", The new barrels with hidden third bite, Dovetail lumps at .731 .010 & .025" (Imp.Cyl. & Imp.Mod.), Original 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .037" and .036" on the left barrel, Birmingham proved at 3 1/4 tons, Double triggers, Bushed strikers, Splinter forend, Straight hand stock at 14 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 2 5/8" over a full face checkered butt, Cast-Off for the right hand, Very nice wood, Great game weight at 6 lbs. 5 oz., 90% coverage of period Purdey rose & scroll. I am almost certain this gun was completely restocked as the wood fore & aft is as stout as you could hope to have. One thing absolute, it was stocked in England and has total & complete appearance by a true professional. I can't say it was Purdey but it is every bit as good as you would expect from that firm. Take a look at the last photo and you will see it is done by an English stocker. This piece remains in very nice condition since it left Churchill in 1953. The barrel blue remains at 85-87%, no case colors remain, the stock finish remains at 88% and the checkering at 95%. Based on the checkering, inletting and the balance plugs in the checkered butt, I have a strong feeling this piece was stocked at Purdey's. It is cased in a leather cornered canvas trunk with a Purdey trade label & Churchill snap caps that I am certain was added after they barreled it. This piece with correct bores, chokes and chamber length has a lot of life left and remains smack on the face with excellent bores. This piece was the #2 gun of a pair with 30" barrels and 2 1/2" chambers that was made in 1889 for driven birds as it originally was bored modified on the right and cylinder on the left.
