* RARE * NEWLY DISCOVERED * FRESH TO MARKET * Excellent WESTLEY RICHARDS, FAUNETA (20 bore shot and ball gun/rifle)
Description: A rare, newly discovered, fresh to market, excellent Westley Richard Fauneta!!! WOW! You almost never see these and this is the third best Fauneta I've ever seen in my fifty years of collecting Westley Richards firearms. The best was ornate and gold inlaid for a Maharajah or Maharini. The second best was profiled in Westley Richards blog, The Explora. For those not familiar with The Fauneta, it is most readily described as a 20 bore Paradox, Holland & Holland's shot and ball gun/rifle with the last three inches of the barrel with a coarsely rifled choke that allowed for use of shot or conical bullet. In 1912, when Holland & Holland's Pardox was no longer patent protected, Westley came out with its own version known as the Explora and the Fauneta. The Explora was the larger 12 bore model (also made in an 8 bore) and the Fauneta was the smaller 20 bore model (also available in 28 bore). To put the Fauneta in its proper historical context, Westley says "Peering back in history, we can see that between 1897 and about 1925 there was a golden moment for the concept of a perfected shot and ball gun/rifle. It delivered what many hunters desired and the Exploras and Faunetas were ordered in good numbers." Westley also noted that, "So important were these models considered at the time that they were given fully ten pages in the memorable 1912 catalogue." This fantastic specimen is in excellent all original finish. There are a few blemish, no doubt from being drug in and out of the cabinet to show it off over the last 100 years, the gun having been completed on August 28, 1925. Nevertheless, this gun has CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION! There are a couple of practical modifications to the gun. The single trigger has been replaced with more reliable double triggers and the rubber butt pad is likely a period addition as the gun was ordered unusually short stocked. This Fauneta was made for L.R. Stuyvesant as documented by Westley Richards. Stuyvesant was an American diplomat prominent in society in the early-to-mid 20th century who served as the Counsel General in Calcutta in the 1930s. His obituary tells of him also being a big game hunter and sportsman. He accompanied Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. on his last big-game hunting expedition in Asia. Stuyvesant's father was a prominent New York city developer and his mother was a Princess from Belgium. There is much more that can be learned about this interesting wealthy gentleman from a simple Google search. Given that this shot and ball gun/rifle was delivered on August 28, 2025, only four months from his wedding to Miss Rosalie Stuyvesant Pillot, I wonder if it might have been a wedding gift. My bride wasn't so generous but one likes to think there are women like that out there. Surely this shot and ball gun/rifle went to India with Stuyvesent. It obviously wasn't used much but perhaps it slayed a man eating tiger or two from a howda atop an Asian elephant. In 1919 Westley Richards published this extract from a letter from the Private Secretary to the Maharajah of Dhar: "It will interest you to know that her Royal Highness The Maharini Sahiba of Dharnhas recently shot a Tiger measuring 10ft. 4ins. with your 20-bore 'Fauneta' Ball and Shot Gun, which H.H. has been using for some time. It stopped the animal with one shot." I love that a lady was tiger hunting in 1919 and successfully! On the other hand, perhaps this minty shot and ball gun/rifle never left its case or cabinet. Don't sleep on this rare opportunity to own an excellent and unusual Westley Richards. You'll likely never have another such opportunity.
