Boss & Co Best back action hammer gun cased in oak and leather
Description: ***Sold pending funds*** Boss & Co Best back action hammer gun cased in oak and leather Built on the Jones underlever action with rebounding hammer locks and finest 4 rod damascus barrels. Finished the 9th day of August 1866; bespoke for Lord Chancellor of Great Britain; 1st Earl Hugh McCalmont Cairns. Only about 95 guns were built by Boss that year along with their first center fire shotgun just a few months before this one. Unmolested, this gun is in outstanding condition considering age. Stunning 29 ½ , 2 ½ chambered black powder proved barrels that measure .734 and retain great wall thickness of 25 thousandth minimum right and 26 thousandth left. Bores are bright with no corrosion inside or out, browning is outstandingly beautiful, choked cylinder in both. Very attractive original stock and forearm with good finish and checkering featuring an artfully inlet steel butt plate. Dimensions are 14 3/8” to center, drop at comb 1 5/8” at heal 2 3/8” and cast off 5/16”. Some slight wood shrinkage and a couple of wood dings have occurred over the last 150 years but do not detract from the quality, beauty or functionality. Metal finishes are all very good and have a beautiful patina. Engraving is excellent and perfectly executed as you’d expect. Weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces this gun is lively and perfectly balanced in the hands. I can only imagine the pride Lord Cairns must have felt when it was delivered. A note to perspective buyers: while this gun was never subjected to nitro proof, I have loaded for and shot it extensively with appropriate hand loads and low pressure loads by RST and Polywad. Those that wish to own a piece of functional art understand this as a responsibility. Many options exist and should not keep anyone from enjoying this gun afield. Offered for sale with hesitation and out of necessity. $7850 delivered to your front door.
