Boss & Co SLE 12ga – 2 BRL, MATCHES ORDER -“ONE DUCK GUN”, vintage firearms
Description: General Specs: Boss & Co, 1939, 12 Gauge, 7lbs. 4oz., Chokes M/F; SK;IC, LOP 14 1/2", DAH 2 3/8", DAC 1 1/2" Serial Number: 8126 Boss & Co. is the oldest maker in the London trade, having its beginnings in 1812 and operating as a privately held company to this day. Boss only made one grade of gun…A BEST GUN. From the Boss : “We would say from the outset that we make only one grade of gun and have never placed a second quality make upon the market. This policy has enabled us to retain the services of the finest workmen in London, and to give them continuous employment. The advantages attending the production of best work only are manifold. There is no opportunity for the work of inferior men to be utilised in the economy of the workshop, which is frequently the case when more than one class of weapon is produced. The owner of a Boss & Co gun has the satisfaction of knowing that he has the best gun that money can buy, and that no one has a better gun. The Boss & Co gun has, therefore, always a standard value whether new or second hand. Our output is strictly limited according to the amount of first class labour available.” Take a look at the photo of the factory records; the handwriting in the records gives an idea of the care that is taken in every aspect of bringing these incredible firearms to their owner. The barrels are a classy, traditional brown finish with gorgeous ribs, and silver front bead. The finish is 99%. The frame, sidelocks, barrel fences, and top tang have beautiful scrollwork, and they retain 95% of their factory case color. One specific note, there is a hard to see light scratch on the left sidelock near the very front. This Boss Best gun is still in Proof, the chambers and chokes match the markings and order book this is important because English Guns that are out of proof (anything that changes its original specifications) are considered a lesser investment as any future buyer will be wary of them. Not so with the beautiful example, it is IN PROOF and will continue to accrue value. The black of the top lever and the trigger guard have 95% of their finish. A rolled right edge can be found on the trigger guard, a unique design detail. The forend latch and escutcheon are beautifully engraved and fit perfectly into the flame-figured walnut. Light flame-figure and deep, rich grain continue onto the straight grip English stock with carved drop points. The point checkering pattern has deep, double borders. Boss offered this type of leather covered pad that is cut back to reveal the rubber recoil pad beneath. Upon discussion with the folks at Boss and referencing the factory records for length of pull, we believe the pad to be part of the original order, although it was not specified directly on the order sheet. The brown leather and the brown barrels tie together nicely. Operationally, the assisted-opener springs to life when the top lever is released. The trigger pulls are crisp, and the ejectors are strong and timed perfectly. There is no such thing as an “average” or “typical” Boss shotgun. Each one is crafted with a level of personality and detail that stands out in its own way. This fine gun is no exception. The “One Duck Gun” with hearty 30” barrels and a separate set of 28” barrels, combined with the brown finishes make this gorgeous gun one to be enjoyed in the field, shown off at the club, or displayed as a centerpiece of your collection. It is ready to be stewarded into the next generation by someone who appreciates history and mastery of craft.
