Churchill XXV O/U 20 gauge Premiere Quality...very scarce
Description: E J Churchill XXV Premiere Quality 20-gauge O/U made in 1933. This is an extremely rare and important Churchill! The XXV (25” barrels) gun series of both SxS guns and a few O/U’s was seemingly unintentionally conceived idea by the Churchill Gunmakers around 1913-1915. The two enduring thoughts are: One that Robert Churchill accidentally blew-up the end of his 30” pigeon gun before the Monte Carlo shoot; cut his barrels off to 25” and enjoyed how they shot OR Two that a snafu occurred in the Churchill plant and a set of 30” barrels were dented, cut-off to 25” and were well received by the buyer…. Regardless the XXV’s had a great following in the SxS world in the early years, enough following that the Company started making a few O/U’s most of which were 12 bore guns with some 16’s and a fewer 20’s. This gun was made in 1933 and was a one-off special-order gun destined to the USA but with a stop off in Paris for an unknown reason, possibly extra engraving on the forearm bosses. This is the highest grade that E J Churchill offered, the Premiere Quality “pin less” sidelock with 25” XXV barrels and inverted solid rib with gold front bead. 2 ½” chambers proved for 7/8 oz loads. Bores are .618”/.618” and it has chokes measuring .003” & .009”. Restocked masterfully in Canada, the round knob “Prince of Wales” grip buttstock is patterned exactly after the original pieces and has a 14 7/8” LOP over a ½” thick Pachmayr presentation recoil pad. 1 3/8" drop at the comb; 2 ¼” drop at the heel and 3/8” cast favoring a right-hand shooter. The forearm matches and both pieces were duplicated from the original configuration. The gun weighs 5 lbs. 14 oz. and balances just like the "legend” it is! This from my initial correspondence with the Ruper Haynes from Churchill: Dear Mr Kinsey, Very nice to hear from you we do hold the original records for this 1933 gun and it is indeed quite a rare gun! The gun was exported to Abercrombie & Fitch in New York, but was requested to be delivered to Paris prior to final delivery. I have no further details as to why this would be, perhaps to be shot and tested for gun fit or for the new owner to view before being sent to the states? I suspect, as this was a single export and not the usual batch exprot to A&F, this was a special order gun, but this is just me reading between the lines… We did export a considerable number of guns to A&F and the records reflect this over the decades, however very few over & under guns and even fewer 20ga o/u’s. The beautifully tight scroll engraved pin less sidelock action is mostly gray where I assume it was originally case coloured with the engraving sharp and crisp. The barrels retain 95-97 blue with a couple of small spots of surface rust on the bottom about 3 ½” from the muzzle. The wood, as I said is a newer replacement and it is 99%.
