G.E. Lewis 16 Bore Hammergun With Nitro Steel Barrels – 2-3/4” Chambers and Long Length of Pull
Description: *** SOLD *** Svelte 16 bore G.E. Lewis treble grip hammergun with 28-1/2” nitro steel browned barrels and 2-3/4” chambers. Wonderfully case-colored action and lock plates. Low rebounding beautifully sculpted hammers that sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. Gracefully curved toplever that allows the action to be opened when the right hammer is cocked. Manufactured in 1881 the replacement nitro steel barrels were made by the maker in 1901. Presented in its original leather case with maker’s label. Weight is 5lb 12oz. The 28-1/2” nitro steel barrels were London proofed for (70mm) 2-3/4” shotshells in 1993 for one-ounce loads. The barrels are browned to look like the original Damascus barrels they replaced. The browning shows wear in some places. The bores are shiny. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave rib which is inscribed “G.E. Lewis (Treble Grip Choke Bore Honors At Paris 1878) 32 & 33 Lower Loveday St. Birmingham No. 5184” and “Melbourn Exhibition”. I am not kidding. It’s all on there! The right barrel is bored 0.677 with a constriction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is bored 0.681 and has a constriction of 0.005 for Light Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. An upland gunner’s dream choking for quail, grouse and woodcock. The straight grip stock and forearm are made of highly figured French walnut. There is a gold shield inset on the top of the comb on which is engraved with what appear to be the initials D above J. Nice hand rubbed oil finish and crisp checkering. Brown 3/4” leather covered pad in excellent condition. Stock dimensions are 14-15/16” including the leather covered pad by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthand shot. Imagine walking up to a pointed covey or a favorite grouse covert with this handsome and elegant hammergun at the ready. Sixteen bores are not called the “Queen of the Uplands” for no reason. It is a very lethal gauge in the hands of an experienced gunner. Make it yours before someone else makes it theirs. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
