J. Purdey 12 Bore Island Lock Hammergun with 30” Nitro Damascus Barrels – No. 1 of a Pair
Description: Wonderful condition Purdey Island Lock Hammergun with nicely figured nitro Damascus barrels and highly figured French walnut stock and forearm. Lord Ripon shot island lock Purdeys all his life. Purdey no. 8147 was made circa 1870 and has recently been professionally refurbished. Very good mechanical and cosmetic condition. Has rotary underlever opening, rebounding hammers, and Anson forearm release. Action can be opened with the hammers cocked. Presented in an oak & leather case with maker’s label. Game gun weight at 6lb 11oz. The 30” nicely figured original Damascus have been reproofed for nitro cartridges and are chambered for 2-1/2” barrels. They are topped by a raised solid concave game style rib. Rib is inscribed “James Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street London”. Bores are shiny and bright. The right barrel is bored 0.741 with a recessed choke of 0.004. Minimum wall thickness is 0.020. The left barrel is bored 0.738 and also has a recessed choke of 0.004. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021. The straighthand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut stock with a warm satin oil finish. Finished off with a thin horn buttplate. Checkering is crisp. There are a few minor handling marks on the stock from normal usage. Stock dimensions are14-1/8” including the thin butt plate by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthanded shooter. This handsome Purdey hammergun comes in the iconic island lock configuration so favored by Lord Ripon. It is a great handling gun and in very good condition. The right lock shows a little blemish on the top edge. The oak & leather case is in very good condition but is not the original case for this gun. It needs a little adjustment to fit the gun perfectly. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
